Why experienced electrical design talent matters
Power infrastructure is receiving increased attention as electricity demand rises. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says U.S. electricity demand is entering its strongest four-year growth period since 2000, with large computing centers among the key drivers. The Department of Energy has also reported that data centers could account for a larger share of U.S. electricity consumption in the coming years.
That demand has implications beyond the data centers themselves. New and expanding power infrastructure depends on coordinated design work, accurate drawings and models, and careful management of project requirements. Electrical systems must be planned and documented so multidisciplinary teams can move work forward while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
This is where an experienced lead technician can make a meaningful contribution. In this role, you’ll help develop and manage technical deliverables for projects supporting power and nuclear infrastructure: work that calls for detailed design knowledge and the ability to coordinate with engineers, designers, technicians, and other stakeholders.

What you’ll do
The Lead Engineering Technician serves as a technical design specialist and project leader. You’ll create, modify, and maintain engineering drawings and models using Bentley MicroStation and related design tools, while helping the team deliver work that meets project specifications and quality procedures.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading or supporting design work in a lead technician, technical specialist, or supervisory capacity.
- Applying advanced technical knowledge to solve complex electrical design and drafting challenges.
- Establishing, communicating, and reinforcing design and graphic standards.
- Reviewing project requirements, deliverable formats, and documentation standards.
- Checking design inputs for accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinating the timely issuance of design deliverables in accordance with quality assurance procedures.
- Maintaining drawing-control procedures and project records.
- Monitoring production activity to help meet budget, schedule, and quality targets.
- Providing technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, designers, technicians, and support staff.
- Coordinating design development with multidisciplinary teams and communicating project needs and progress to stakeholders.
- Supporting process improvements, new design workflows, and the continued development of design standards.
The work combines hands-on design expertise with leadership and coordination. You’ll need to exercise independent judgment, organize competing priorities, and help colleagues maintain consistent technical standards.

Experience and skills for success
Candidates must have at least 15 years of relevant experience in engineering design, drafting, or technician work, along with leadership experience. An associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Design Technology, or a related field is required. A bachelor’s degree in Engineering Design Technology or a related discipline is preferred.
Advanced experience with Bentley MicroStation and related Bentley software is required, as is experience with SmartPlant Electrical. You should also bring a strong understanding of electrical design principles and experience developing 2D and 3D deliverables for large industrial, power-generation, or infrastructure projects.
The position also calls for capability in:
- Coordinating design teams and work across multiple disciplines.
- Managing project deliverables, schedules, and budgets.
- Communicating clearly with technical teams and stakeholders.
- Organizing project documentation and maintaining quality standards.
Preferred experience includes nuclear industry projects and a background in power generation, utilities, industrial work, or heavy infrastructure. Familiarity with AGI32 for lighting design, illumination calculations, and facility modeling is an advantage. Previous supervision or management of technical design personnel is also preferred.
Technical areas of focus
The work may involve design deliverables across several electrical and facility systems:
- Electrical power systems
- Duct bank design
- Cable tray design
- Grounding systems
- Lighting design
- Electrical equipment layouts
- Nuclear facility infrastructure
- 2D and 3D design modeling
Candidates should be ready to describe their direct experience with these systems, the design tools they’ve used, and the scale and type of projects they have supported.
